That was a horrifying and tragic situation. A truly civilized society, real human beings, maintain a spirit of generosity and compassion, and seek to SOLVE problems in humane ways.

Rather, we criminalize things that are not that serious, and NEVER address the roots of the more serious crimes.

My friend, we have to make a decision: we know things are wrong, and are getting MORE wrong every day. We even have a pretty good idea that corporate/political corruption/collusion are behind it. My friend, those are not human beings, and we have them massively outnumbered. However, we have to break people out of their apathy.

Take a read of Neil Postman’s writings. He discusses much about education, apathy, and promotes ideas of useful activism. It has led me to the idea of creating small neighborhood gatherings of concerned citizens, exchanging knowledge, and building consensus to take action. Over time, perhaps a world-wide network of well-informed, humane people can begin to take charge of the affairs that should have never been surrendered.

Here’s a link to Postman’s earliest book online. It has frequent typos, but it’s free and I found it PRACTICABLE: http://blogs.oregonstate.edu/smedcohort/files/2009/07/Teaching-as-a-Subversive-Activity-Postman.pdf
